Dr. Barrett:

So everywhere you look today, if you just look around, you're gonna see people that are trying to maximize their life. And they're maxing out an area of their life, maybe it's their sleep, maybe it's their morning routine. And I think it's a phrase you'll hear a lot more, sleep maxing, fiber maxing. And what I wanna speak on is the enemy of comparison. It's easy to look and compare and try to adopt that lifestyle thinking you're going to achieve the same results, but inevitably it leaves empty and it leaves us really with confusion because we can't even do what that maxed out area is consistently long enough.

Dr. Barrett:

So what am I talking about? I think there's an allure of extremism. Now most people would say I'm extremist. Most people would look at my life and say that's extreme. But what you don't see is twenty years in development.

Dr. Barrett:

What you don't see is twenty years of discipline. What you don't see is twenty years of growing and maturing. It didn't happen overnight. Expect I you to do the health hacks and trends and disciplines that I do every day. I would never expect that.

Dr. Barrett:

And I think when we expect that of ourselves, it leaves us empty, guilty, shameful, and full of anxiety. I mean how rewarding is it to feel like you're failing every day because you're not living up to some standard of someone else? And so the allure of extreme hacks creates that deficit. Viral hacks that we see, they grab our attention because they promise this quick control and instant results. Whether it's ice baths every day or mouth taping or knocking down 20 supplements all at once, they sound powerful but they easily become compulsions.

Dr. Barrett:

And instead of adding peace they actually add anxiety and rob the joy of your life. So you start to feel like you're failing if you miss one hack and then that adds in guilt and shame. And then it literally does the opposite of what it was intended to do which was create health and now you're in a state of anxiety and obsession. And why obsession then becomes unhealthy is because it creates an anxiety loop. It's constant tracking and bio tracking, bio hacking based on your trends and your tracks and what you just measure the night for the day of and then stacking new habits can make you feel actually less free, not more free.

Dr. Barrett:

And then there's just dangers with that, not just the mental danger of that physical implication. So this week, the first thing I want you to identify is when you look at populations that are the healthiest, call them blue zones, these populations are about spirituality, community, eating together, being outside, and living a simple life. This week, simplify your health. Simplify your life. What that practically look like?

Dr. Barrett:

Am I against all of these huge discipline? No, live a disciplined life. But just remember that you were not created to live a life of extremism with guilt and shame and you don't accomplish and check the boxes. Your discipline should come out of a love and a joy for what you're doing. What are your goals?

Dr. Barrett:

What are your desires? And what's going to move the needle just 1%? Maybe that's just walking today. It's good enough. You don't have to go run five miles.

Dr. Barrett:

Maybe it's not drinking a certain beverage today. Great job. Keep up the good work. Maybe it's getting to bed before ten. Keep up the good work.

Dr. Barrett:

Great job. Look from where you've come and reward the behaviors that have allowed you to get to the health place you are today. And don't live too far into the future and compare yourself to others. Comparison is the enemy of joy. This week I don't want you to compare yourself to anyone else or anything else.

Dr. Barrett:

Focus on what you're doing well and identify an area that you want to improve and make one small step to lasting change. We heal with time and repetition. Remove the guilt and shame this week. Be free from that. Don't compare.

Dr. Barrett:
