I've been processing this week on the God who provides. Psalms 23:1 starts off with "the Lord is my shepherd, and I shall not want." This whole week, I've just been wrestling with this idea of not being in want or in need. And so today, I wanna give you three truths that will help you shift your mind from being in want to a spirit that is completely filled with peace and purpose and can rest in the truth of knowing that God provides. Jehovah Jireh is the lord god who provides.
Dr. Barrett:So Psalm 23:1 says, "the Lord is my shepherd, and I shall not want." So as a shepherd, He provides for His sheep in a way that's protection and nourishment and direction. To not be in one doesn't necessarily mean we have everything we desire. It just means that we don't lack- we lack nothing that's essential. When God is our shepherd, we can fully trust His care, even in those seasons where we may be in a wilderness or a season of battle or a season of testing our faith.
Dr. Barrett:His provision isn't isn't material. It's not just material. He provides material things for us, but it isn't just material. It's peace, it's purpose, and it's his presence that satisfies our need. The second verse I want you to meditate on this week is Philippians 4:19, "that my God shall supply every need according to His riches and glory in Christ Jesus."
Dr. Barrett:Paul here isn't giving this prosperity promise. He's speaking from a from a place of deep trust. He's in prison writing to the Philippians. "God's provision here" is very personal. He says, "my God shall supply all your needs."
Dr. Barrett:And it's true to say my God will supply all of my needs in Jesus Christ. So in Christ, we are fully supported and supplied in every need that we could ever imagine. It doesn't mean we have every wants fulfilled. That means we have every need fulfilled. Our needs are typically not material.
Dr. Barrett:You can ask anyone who has everything in the world, but if they don't know Christ, if they don't have a relationship with their maker, with their creator, they're gonna tell you they are lacking something. I was talking to someone today, and he's- we're having this conversation about separation from the relationship of our Creator, our Maker. And when we're separated, there's this deep longing within all our hearts to be connected. And when we are, and when we're rooted in a relationship with Christ, our needs are fulfilled. We can live from a place of contentment and not lack.
Dr. Barrett:Third point, the Christian life is not lived in scarcity, but it's in the overflow of God's grace. Being without one doesn't mean your life is perfect. It means you're grounded in confidence that God is enough, that Jehovah Jireh is God's name, that He provides for every need that you could ever ask for. Whether your season is a season of abundance or a season of lack, you are fully rich in Christ. You're fully satisfied in Him.
Dr. Barrett:In Him is the fullness of life. It's the water that runs in this well that never runs dry, that when you drink of it, there's no more thirst. It says, "who those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, they are filled." It's the woman at the well that had a sip of water being Christ and never went dry again. Jesus gives us this sense of fulfillment that if we draw from, we'll never run dry, we'll never feel dry, even if we're in a external season of a desert.
Dr. Barrett:Even when conflict and crisis happens, there's a peace that surpasses all human understanding. The goal in this life is not to accumulate more, but it's to trust God deeper. More is never satisfying. You will never have enough externally, materialistically. Anything in this world will never satisfy, but we are fully satisfied in Christ.
Dr. Barrett:What a dichotomy to live in a world where we can have everything we could possibly want yet still be in need. Jesus supplies that need. Draw from Him this week from a well that never runs dry. Have confidence that my God will supply every need according to His riches glory. Have confidence in a Shepherd who will meet every needs you could possibly have.
Dr. Barrett:If you feel like you're lacking anything, my question to you would be this week, where are you getting your sufficiency from? Where are you drawing it from? And just rest this week in the sufficiency of Christ, knowing that He will supply and meet and exceed every need in your life. I pray a blessing over you this week.
